Amelia Island-01

Amelia Island, FloridaWe have all heard about Key West and Fort Lauderdale for the gay and lesbian community to go a feel comfortable in your own skin. Well, add Amelia Island to the list.

The people of this small barrier island are some of the nicest and warm people I have ever met. The moment we arrived we were welcomed. Even the church across the street, came over with warm bread and all welcomed us to the community. It was a big deal considering my partner and I just bought The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast.

Amelia IslandYou never really know how or who will take notice of two women opening a B&B. Our worries disappeared after a few gay and lesbian locals came knocking on our door. Apparently we are now being referred to as “The Ladies” of The Hoyt House.

It is funny that after being a little concerned about the community response, it actually was a relief to some as they could now talk about their gay brother or lesbian sister or the uncle that still cant get out of the closet. Amelia Island truly opened her arms. Almost all of the properties are gay friendly. It truly is a safe and supportive community to visit or live.

Amelia IslandAs far as things to do well it is a huge list. The Island only 14 miles long and 2 miles wide is packed full of things to do. Kayaking, horseback riding on the beach, Amelia Island River Cruises with an adult only sunset cruise with BYOB and live music.

We have sky diving, fishing, private chartering, Eco tours via boat or kayak. We even have Segway tours. The usual jet sky and water skiing can be found as well. For a special treat enjoy horse drawn buggy ride through the Historic District.

If culture and nature are your thing don’t miss a trip to Fort Clinch or the Amelia Island Museum. There are art tours and a ton of galleries and jewelry stores along with clothing stores and can’t miss the Pirates of Amelia Island. Sometimes they even walk the streets in full dress.

Amelia Island

The weekends usually have at least five or six places to hear live music and the Palace Saloon being in the Guinness World record holder of the longest continuous running saloon & bar. Amelia Island Film Society puts on special screenings of some of the most amazing films of old and new. A quaint theatre with wine or coffee service.

For a real treat, come to the beach in the evening as see the baby turtles getting a hand out of the nest and into the deep blue sea.

Amelia IslandIf your thing is food, we have something like 76 restaurants on the island, with 42 within walking distance from The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast. Located in the Historic District it is the heart of Amelia Island. You can get anything here. Mexican, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and of course American foods with seafood being everywhere.

There are some great restaurants and we can tell you that on the weekend you will need reservations. The Ritz Carlton on the Island as well and the resrtaurant Salt is awesome. Pricey but you are having dinner at The Ritz. Also the Ritz has a 30,000+ square foot spa where you can get the best spa services in the world. That is truly a wonderful gift as I just sent my partner there and she still hasn’t stopped smiling.

I was named after this island as my parents were lucky enough to get married there! Beautiful, and in the summer, rather hot, but the southern atmosphere is amazing! Those stretches of beaches are one of a kind and I used to spend many weeks of my summer there when I was younger! Now when I go to Florida, I venture and see other places, and I am so glad I did. Though Amelia will always be in my heart, Orlando, Miami and Palm Bay are great as well. Especially Palm Bay, the quiet, quaint nature of it keeps me coming back! Love staying at the Palm Bay Hotel ( Great on my wallet and the pools are fantastic.

This is a dream island. My partner and I own a villa at Amelia Island plantation. Very Southern environment. Not the “pushy” south Florida people. Clean. Class A beaches. Sometimes we are the only ones on the beach. I am shocked that there are not many more gay s here. It’s the perfect retreat guys!

Wonderful blog! I found it while searching on Yahoo News.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News?
I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there!
Many thanks

My partner and I always stay at Amelia Island Plantation, Sandcastles Villa’s. The beach is private, natural and the people are welcoming and so friendly. Very dog friendly too. We will never go to South Florida again..this is heaven.

I love this island with all my heart and when I read that it was lgbt inclusive with just about everything it shocked me because I had lived there for 18 long years and never knew but now I am back after living in jacksonville for a couple years and I’ve fallen in love with my home town all over again

Amelia Island is lovely. My partner and I searched for a location for a second home for years. After a weeks visit to Amelia Island we knew that was the place for us. We found a great realtor Melissa at Coldwell Banker. She is a NY transplant with a background in design which helped because we felt she got us. After a little searching we found our perfect beach house. We can walk to the beach and ride our bicycles all over the island. Saturday’s there is a great farmers market in town. We could not be any happier. The town offers tons of charm and the easy southern polite, unhurried kind of living you dream of.
