Hotel Chains Discovering the Gay Market

Author: , August 29th, 2011

Just because we’re seeing more brands like Hilton and W taking full-page ads in gay publications doesn’t mean the same-sex niche is a new phenomenon. To see where it started, you need only look at longstanding gay vacation destinations like Fort Lauderdale and Key West, Fla., Provincetown, Mass. and Palm Springs, Calif. “And,” adds gay travel writer, Mark Chesnut, “areas like New York’s Fire Island, California’s Russian River Valley and New Hope, Penn., are also among the earliest where small, upscale hotels targeting gay travelers appeared.”

Chesnut, whose travel site LatinFlyer.com gives tourists of all stripes insight into LatAm destinations, warns innkeepers and hotel chains alike that putting up a rainbow flag and calling your place “gay-friendly” won’t build clientele. “My partner and I got weird looks from a hotel receptionist in Massachusetts just because we asked for a room with one king-sized bed.”

Guests at the Adonis Tulum Riviera Maya Gay Resort & Spa will suffer no such indignities. And on the whole, says E-Commerce Sales Executive Fernando Garcia Castro, Mexico has come a long way in the arena of gay rights. “In the past, a same-sex kiss, or even a couple holding hands, was almost forbidden, but the gay community has been gaining respect throughout the country. It’s better every day.”

NV: Las Vegas May Market to Gay Honeymooners

Author: , August 29th, 2011

Las Vegas Gay HoneymoonsWith a growing number of states offering gay marriage – New York being the latest – officials in Las Vegas are considering marketing honeymoons to gay and lesbian couples.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, the city’s convention and visitors authority has already discussed the possibility.

Marriage in Nevada is limited to heterosexual couples. Voters in 2002 approved a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in the state. In 2009, lawmakers overrode Republican Governor Jim Gibbons’ veto to approve a domestic partnership law that recognizes gay couples with many of the rights of marriage.

Gay Tourists Avoiding Greece

Author: , August 28th, 2011

Greece Gay TravelDebt-ravaged Greece’s biggest industry is missing income from a group of visitors that spends more than $140 billion a year.

Gay and lesbian tourists, who for decades flocked to the islands of Mykonos and Lesbos, have removed Greece from their list of top destinations because of discrimination, according to surveys by Amsterdam-based OutNow Consulting. The government says it intends to boost tourism and will change the law so Greece follows France and the U.K. in recognizing same-sex partnerships.

“Rights do not cost much in terms of finances, but they do a lot to promote the countries that adopt them,” said Martin Christensen, co-chairman of ILGA-Europe, a Brussels-based rights group. “If Greece opens marriage to same-sex couples, the international media will for once give the country good press that would boost morale and can increase revenue.”
