Nepal is to hold its first gay pride parade, the country’s only out MP said this week. Sunil Pant said that the parade would be incorporated into a traditional Nepalese festival to be held in the country’s capital, Kathmandu, in August.
The Gaijatra is a centuries-old Hindu festival (the country is over eighty percent Hindu) in which men traditionally don women’s attire. Gaijatra is one of the countries most popular holidays, and the pride parade will be incorporated into these existing celebrations.
The festival is likely to attract nearly 3,000 LGBT people from Nepal and neighbouring countries. The parade will feature live music, elephants dressed in bright colours and will close with a candle-lit memorial service for victims of HIV and violence.
