Five Great Gay Marriage Travel Destinations
scott, August 7th, 2010 Same-sex couples tired of waiting for California to get over its issues with homophobia should be encouraged by the number of great places where same-sex marriage isn’t just legal, it’s welcomed – in a few cases for years. (If you guessed “Utah,” please move to the back of the line.)
While the logistics of actually saying “I do” away from home can be lengthy and complex (especially overseas), here’s five destinations that support same-sex marriage that are worth seeing – and worth supporting with tourist dollars.
Vancouver, B.C.: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Canada since 2005, although Vancouver’s favorite “gayborhood,” Davie Village, has been the gay and lesbian heartbeat since long before that. A lot of the same vibe here as in San Francisco, although with an even bigger mix of ethnic cultures.
Barcelona, Spain: Fortunately, Gen. Francisco Franco is still dead. (To say the famed dictator was not a friend of Friends of Dorothy is a hefty understatement.) Among the best-loved cities in Spain for same-sex culture and nightlife, the main gay neighborhood in Barcelona is L’Eixample (alternately known as Gayxample), but much of the rest of the city is so vibrant don’t limit yourself, especially after 10 p.m. when the dinner bell finally rings.
